Abstract:
This study highlights the pivotal role of migrants in the socio-economic transformation of the Agba region between 1910 and 1975. It primarily seeks to demonstrate how migratory flows, whether internal or cross-border, particularly from Haute-Volta and Mali, have contributed to the region’s economic development, the diversification of activities, and the shaping of its social structure. By adopting a historical and socio-anthropological approach, the research explores the motivations behind migration, often driven by the pursuit of agricultural, commercial, or artisanal opportunities, as well as its impact on local dynamics. The findings reveal that migrants were key drivers of regional development. They introduced innovative farming techniques, boosted trade, and facilitated the emergence of urban centers. Their presence also enriched the cultural fabric of Agba, fostering solidarity networks and new forms of community organization. Moreover, the transfer of skills and interethnic interactions strengthened social cohesion and accelerated economic integration. Thus, far from being a mere demographic phenomenon, migration in Agba served as a strategic lever for modernization and growth, laying the foundation for sustainable and inclusive development.
